Can foreigners use Alipay in 2026?

This is the Alipay-only setup: register, add an international card, finish any identity prompt, find the Pay code, and troubleshoot the first bank approval before a cashier is waiting.

Paying by scanning a QR code on a smartphone

Alipay is the first wallet most visitors should configure because it covers everyday QR payments and exposes travel mini-apps such as transport, ride-hailing and ticketing.

Use the broader China payment guide for cash, WeChat Pay and card backup planning. This page stays inside Alipay.

How to set up Alipay (step by step)

Download & register

Get Alipay from the App Store or Google Play and register with your international phone number to receive a one-time code.

Use the visitor interface

Switch to English or the international visitor flow if prompted, then open the card or payment setup area.

Link a supported card

The official visitor guide lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover. Actual eligibility depends on the issuer, card product and Alipay’s binding screen.

Verify and test

Complete any passport or face check Alipay requests, open the Pay code, and confirm your bank-app, SMS or email approval route still reaches you.

Scan or show your QR

Alipay payments use two different actions. Knowing which side scans avoids the little counter panic every first-timer has once.

SituationWhat you doWhat to check
Small restaurant, stall or taxiTap Scan and scan the merchant's printed QR codeConfirm the merchant name and amount before paying
Supermarket, chain store or ticket deskOpen Pay/Collect and let the cashier scan your barcode or QRHide the code when you are not paying
Metro or city transportOpen the transport card or city transit code inside AlipayUse the correct city before reaching the gate
DiDi or mini-app orderPay inside the mini-app flowMake sure the linked card is selected before confirming

If your card is rejected

A successful card binding does not guarantee every later transaction. Work from the message on the failed screen:

Alipay limits, prompts and fee screens

Alipay screen or limitHow to read it
Published visitor ceilingUse the US$5,000 single-payment and US$50,000 annual figures as policy-level outer caps, not a guaranteed allowance for a card or account.
Identity promptPassport or face-check screens usually mean Alipay wants more verification before higher-risk use.
Issuer approvalA bank app, SMS code or 3D Secure screen belongs to your card issuer; Alipay cannot override a bank refusal.
Service-fee lineCharging standards can vary by payment product. Review any fee and exchange-rate line on the final confirmation screen.
Chinese bank account? Not needed for ordinary visitor payments.

For meals, taxis, metro trips and ordinary shops, the foreign-card flow is usually the point of Alipay. For expensive hotels, deposits or luxury retail, treat the app as one possible route and keep a desk-friendly card ready.

Do not make Alipay the only plan

Set up a second wallet and carry some RMB cash. Some failures are not Alipay failures at all: they are bank alerts, mobile-data gaps or merchant preferences. The full backup stack is in the China payment guide.

Alipay setup questions

Can foreigners use Alipay without a Chinese bank account?

Yes. Alipay lets foreign visitors link supported international cards directly, so a Chinese bank account is not required for ordinary travel payments. Register with your phone number, bind the card, complete any identity checks, and pay by scanning QR codes or showing your payment code.

How do I link a foreign card to Alipay?

Open Alipay, enter the card section, and add a supported international card. China’s official visitor guide lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover, but eligibility still depends on the issuer and product. Complete any bank approval and identity prompts shown in the app.

Why is my foreign card being rejected by Alipay?

The issuer may reject the binding or payment, Alipay may request more identity verification, or the specific merchant and transaction type may not support the bound card. Read the error message, try another supported card, and contact the issuer or Alipay support rather than repeatedly scanning.

What are the Alipay limits for foreigners?

The government-published outer ceiling for overseas visitors using mobile-payment platforms is US$5,000 for one transaction and US$50,000 cumulatively per year. These are not guaranteed Alipay allowances: card brands, fees and usable limits can vary by product, verification, issuer and transaction, so the in-app prompt controls.

How do I pay with Alipay in a shop?

There are two flows. For a static merchant QR, tap Scan and scan the code at the counter. For supermarkets, chains and metro gates, open Pay/Collect or the transport code and let the merchant scan your code.
